John's Notes on How to Revise with Joy

Remember that revision shouldn't hurt. It shouldn't be boring. It's all about finding the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual core of what you are saying and developing out of there. Revision is not necessarily something you do after creation but can be an active part of creating your work.

Here are some techniques:

Figuring out what the center of your work is.

Building out through word choice.

Quick reduction method -- forcing yourself to make choices.

Setting Integration.

What are echoes and why do they matter? How do they point to what matters? What is the opposite of an echo?

Prose is always poetry, and poetry is moved by prose.

Keeping your darlings. What are darlings? What do they indicate?
